Last week female Northern Map Turtles were just all over the place in Fluhrer Park, laying eggs in the gravel roadbed of what could become the Wellington Street Extension. I saw some myself and friends and acquaintances have reported them to me also. As you can see from the shadow in this photo, there were paparazzi, but the turtles were doing their thing nonetheless.

Some of you have heard me say that for me, stopping this road is “not about the turtles” — it’s not sentimental or local but rather about larger political and environmental imperatives. But you know, watching these turtles invest in the future and trusting the world to look after their eggs, it makes me certain that paving this area over would be truly sick.
